A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Midsummer Night's Dream

One of Shakespeare’s most well-known comedies is also a bittersweet drama about the nature of love. Young people get lost in an enchanted forest, and while looking for their partners, they realise that in this world, love is not just a dependency, it is also the remedy to loneliness. The young people looking fortheir lovers amongst this upheaval are actually looking for themselves in the other, and this search may lead to either happiness or despair.

Following Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, the Harangozó Award winner Noémi Kulcsár adapted another Shakespeare classic in her own grotesque, funny, yet abstract dance language. In this contemporary, modern adaptation, Shakespeare’s heroes play chase to the music of Felix Mendelssohn’s work of the same title, played by the artists of the Tellabor Company. All the characters of A Midsummer Night's Dream appear on stage, including the lovers, Theseus and Hippolyta, Oberon, the king of the fairies and the fairy queen Titania, as well as the craftsmen and the naughty Puck. The production’s audience is the part of a dream that is bright and dark at the same time, in which these excitingly contemporary characters chase each other in the undergrowth, through dreams and nightmares. The original 2017 premiere took place in the Gyula Castle Theatre at the request of the Shakespeare Festival.

Our offer

Yvette Bozsik’s solo performance was inspired by Mineko Iwasaki, the protagonist of Memoirs of a Geisha. The performance takes viewers into the lonely, secretive, and personal world of Women of Dance and Art, the memoir of an elderly dancer who always danced with her whole soul. Yvette Bozsik’s iconic partner, Tamás Vati, also features in the performance, which reveals the inner work of a dancer’s self-knowledge, rituals, inner vibrations, and secrets in the triple unity of body, soul, and spirit. Yvette Bozsik’s solo performance was inspired by the autobiography Geisha of Gion by Mineko Iwasaki, the protagonist of the world-famous book and film Memoirs of a Geisha.

From where we are, we cannot see what lies around the next bend. Something comes to an end—and something else begins. In the words of the Alaine Polcz Academy: “Our aim is to break taboos and think together about life and death in a no-nonsense environment.”

Two misunderstood people starved for love who in their own way have taken on a role to protect themselves from disappointment. However, neither of them could have imagined that on that particular day in Oradea, their meeting would lead to a new and passionate romance... one that would sweep them both away and shake Hungarian literature to its very foundations.
