Chotto Desh • Akram Khan Company

Akram Khan Company is delighted to be bringing back its much-loved family-friendly production of Chotto Desh. Adapted by Theatre-Rites’ director, Sue Buckmaster, in 2015 from Akram Khan’s Olivier Award-winning solo and critically acclaimed DESH, this heart-warming story follows a young man trying to find his place in the world. Now, it returns to capture the attention and imagination of a new generation of younger audiences.  more

Chotto Desh, meaning ‘small homeland’, draws on Khan’s unique quality of cross-cultural storytelling, creating a compelling tale of a boy’s dreams and memories from Britain to Bangladesh that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit in the modern world. Blending Kathak and contemporary dance with an exquisite mix of spoken text, dreamlike animation, visuals and specially composed music, Chotto Desh is an enchanting and poignant dance-theatre experience for children aged 7+ and their families to enjoy together.

Our offer

Compared to Swan Lake, the well-known version of the classical ballet, I wished to rephrase the piece from another aspect, in a different light. In my interpretation, Siegfried is a young man with a split mind, who is being held captive by the traumas of his childhood as a result of his relationship with his mother.

Bármerre járjak is, a helyet, a kultúrát, az arcokat, a pillanatokat már örökre viszem tovább magammal. Az élmények velem jönnek, épp úgy, ahogy a múltat is magunkkal visszük. Ami ma a jelenem, holnap a múltammá válik. De melyik másodperc az, mely a kettőt elválasztja?

This production of the FrenÁk Company features adynamic team, the members of a new generation. The young, creative dancers draw on the energies of their colourful cultural and linguistic differences as they bring a new creative approach to FrenÁk’s concept. It is a fusion of the arts, a multimedia work with two contrasting yet complementary parts that reflect on the contradictions of our times.
