At the Marketplace of Kolozsvár - Hungarian State Folk Ensemble

Nowadays shopping centers seem to take their place, but market places used to play a central role in everyday life in each and every town, and Kolozsvár (today called Cluj-Napoca) was no different. Farmers sold their fresh vegetables, milk and butter, their services, and their animals here. People enjoyed themselves after having earned their wages with a hard day’s work.

Future husbands met their future wives, and everybody gossiped or just listened to the latest news.

For the 10th anniversary of the Hungarian Cultural Days of Cluj, the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble created the atmosphere of this imaginary market place on the stage. The piece cannot paint a full picture, but definitely inspires historical musings using the poetic language of folk dance and folk music.

Our offer

Once upon a time, there was a widow who had two daughters.

The Faces of Love is deeply rooted in three iconic works by Sándor Márai: Embers, Esther’s Inheritance, and Divorce in Buda. These works are significant not only for their literary value, but also for the way in which they masterfully and sensitively portray the deepest and most complex layers of the relationship between men and women, which are relevant in all times and cultures. The performance uses this rich emotional and philosophical background to stage the universal story of love in three distinct, yet intertwined images, with the help of live music and Márai’s poems.

Located between present-day Hungary and Transylvania, Partium is a wonderful region rich in culture and colour. Its geographical boundaries changed frequently through the storms of history, making it difficult to determine the exact area of the original Partium.
