The Faces of Love is deeply rooted in three iconic works by Sándor Márai: Embers, Esther’s Inheritance, and Divorce in Buda. These works are significant not only for their literary value, but also for the way in which they masterfully and sensitively portray the deepest and most complex layers of the relationship between men and women, which are relevant in all times and cultures. The performance uses this rich emotional and philosophical background to stage the universal story of love in three distinct, yet intertwined images, with the help of live music and Márai’s poems.
From Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály through György Martin and Sándor Tímár to Ferenc Novák, the diverse folk art of the Mezőség region has attracted the interest of many collectors. Therefore, Zsolt Juhász, the bandleader and director, must have had plenty of resources to work with when he thought about the show: “We want to show our feelings, our love for the region and its beauty. A multicultural region with Hungarians, Romanians and Gypsies—that is the coexistence we are trying to showcase.”
This production of the FrenÁk Company features adynamic team, the members of a new generation. The young, creative dancers draw on the energies of their colourful cultural and linguistic differences as they bring a new creative approach to FrenÁk’s concept. It is a fusion of the arts, a multimedia work with two contrasting yet complementary parts that reflect on the contradictions of our times.
