Carmen
Dance Fantasy in One Act
This time Georges Bizet’s renowned opera inspired the performance of Varidance. However, our performance is not set in historic Seville, but in present-day Hungary. Let us say, in a small rural community where the members of a much-closed community populate this passionate, immersive story, with Carmen, the beautiful gipsy girl at their head. The performance shows an amalgamation of Hungarian and gipsy dances accompanied by Bizet’s fantastic music played by the Karaván Família.
A long time ago we were birds, like all other beautiful birds.
We had no home, nor house,
Yet, the world belonged to us.
However dreary this life is,
We are birds, still.
Our wings may have turned arms, the skies still await us.

The idea for The Nutcracker ballet came from theone-time director of the Tsarist theatre who, based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s fairy tale entitled the Nutcracker and the Mouse King, wanted to stage a fairy tale ballet that would surpass all that had gone before, both in sound and in spectacle. Tchaikovsky was asked to compose the music and after Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty his third and final ballet was also a great success. It was the six-movement suite of the music of The Nutcracker that was first performed in March 1892, and in December of the same year the spectacularly presented theatrical work was also performed. The Nutcracker has become the most frequently played ballet piece of all time.
A box can hide many things, especially if we can passthrough it into another, fairy-tale, magical dimension. The protagonist of the piece tries to make friends in a game world and meets various puppets. He learns that they have the same emotions, the same bonds and relationships develop between them as if they were people, and maybe he can even fall in love with one of them.
The Fitos Dezső Dance Company is careful to regularly stage dance theatre performances that consider the authentic transmission of folklore and the cultures of various historical Hungarian regions as their primary goal. Transylvania Express is a selection of Transylvanian dances and music. With this performance, we want to convey the message that traditional culture lives on in all of us who believe in the value of keeping tradition alive—because tradition defines our future!
